Introduction to
Academic Presentations
Supporting students through the process of designing and delivering coherent presentations
Introduction
Presentations provide students with an opportunity to explore a range of academic skills based around critically analysing the task, researching appropriate information, designing materials in a coherent logical framework, developing argumentation ability, understanding the project planning process, and managing time.
However, it is often the case that teaching the process of how to design effective presentation is not given the same systematic focus as developing academic writing ability. Moreover, an assigned task of a presentation can be especially challenging for some international students who are not familiar with such learning tasks in the domestic experience, especially in terms of working in a self-managed planning context.
Consequently, this professional development experience will examine approaches to teaching the complete process required to respond effectively to assigned presentation tasks, both individual and team based, by reviewing practical examples of materials that can subsequently be used in the learning context. The five themes covered on this course are:
Examining the potential benefits of presentation assignments as an active learning style
Evaluating typical challenges experienced by international students when assigned both individual and team based presentations
Teaching the process of developing presentations
Guiding students through how to deliver effective presentations
Helping students to anticipate questions and manage the presentation audience
The Course Aim
To understand how to help students design, plan, and deliver the key stages of both individual and team based presentations
The Course Objective
By the end of this course participants should be able to guide students through the complete process of how to research, manage, and deliver effective presentations that illustrate sensitivity to the target audience.
