Introduction to

Project Planning

Introducing students to the process of assignment project planning

Introduction

Learning how to plan, prepare, and manage assigned projects is one of the most important skills students need to acquire on arrival at international institutions of higher education, especially in the context of extended coursework assignments. This is also an essential skill in relation to the development of a successful approach to personal and time allocation management. However, in some cultural contexts, students have limited opportunities to develop project management skills, given that extended coursework assignments are not typically an aspect of the domestic learning experience.

Consequently, this professional development experience will examine the 8 practical steps in the project planning process, while also exploring simple models to help students allocate time more effectively. More specifically, this course will examine the common causes for last-minute activity by students and analyse ways to promote possible supportive solutions in relation to planning schedules. The five themes covered on this course are:

  • Examining the importance of project planning and time allocation skills

  • Evaluating the typical causes of student planning failures

  • Understanding the impact of contrasting cross-cultural perceptions of time on project planning

  • Developing the ability of students to analyse and plan specific responses to assigned project tasks

  • Teaching students the 8 steps in the process of effective project planning

The Course Aim

To help students develop an understanding of the key stages in the process of project planning, management, and the application of effective time allocation strategies

The Course Objective

By the end of this course, participants should be able to teach students how to effectively manage common project challenges by applying the 8 key steps in the process of project management, especially in the context of successfully completing extended coursework assignments.

The Key Learning Outcomes

The primary learning outcomes will focus on supporting educators to do the following:

  • Analyse the project scope and key task instructions

  • Avoid common distractions to successful project management

  • Focus on appropriate language, academic conventions, and proofreading skills to ensure high standard submissions
