Introduction to
Tutorial Encounters
Preparing, managing, and actively participating during the tutorial encounters
Introduction
Group or individual tutorials provide students with an important learning opportunity to develop a range of research, planning, and oral participative skills in the academic learning process. In addition to formal programmed tutorials, informal encounters with students requesting advice or help with some aspect of the learning process tend to be commonplace.
However, apart from the language challenge, many international students can be unfamiliar in the domestic learning context with such teaching style encounters.
Consequently, this professional development experience will explore ways to teach international students how to prepare, manage, and actively participate during both formal and informal tutorial encounters that can enable educators to assist students in a more time effective and focused response. The five themes covered on this course are:
Evaluating the scope and role of the tutorial experience
Exploring the key steps in the delivery of tutorials
Anticipating and managing common challenges experienced by international students during the tutorial process
Developing student awareness of the purpose and value of tutorial engagement
Teaching students how to plan, manage, and actively participate in the tutorial process
The Course Aim
To develop an understanding of the importance of the tutorial encounter in an international learning context
The Course Objective
By the end of this course, participants should be able to help students to plan, prepare, and manage the tutorial learning experience to enable active participation throughout the process.
The Key Learning Outcomes
The primary learning outcomes will focus on supporting educators to do the following:
Explain the importance of the tutorial experience as an active rather than passive learning style experience
Highlight the connection between tutorials and the successful completion of other assigned tasks
Research, plan, and prepare the tutorial process to accurately respond to task and audience learning requirements
State how to use appropriate language to present information in a logical order that demonstrates cohesion and coherence in the development of arguments in support of evidence
Develop brainstorming and note-making techniques that enable accurate recording of the tutorial encounter for future learning reference
