Introduction to
Teamwork Skills
Learning how to work effectively during teamwork assignments
Introduction
Developing the ability to work effectively in teams is an essential learning expectation at an international university. Teamworking is also a key soft skill required by future graduate employers when recruiting for job vacancies.
Unlike group membership in which tasks are assigned to individuals under continuous direct supervision, collaborative working requires members to understand their specific role in the team, manage relationships with other members, avoid interpersonal conflict, and acquire an ability to become confident more independent self-managed participants to achieve the project objective.
Consequently, this course will guide students through the steps required to perform effectively in a team context with an emphasis on the development of key competencies such as team leadership, time management, and a range of essential interpersonal communication skills. The five themes covered on this course are:
Clarifying the contrast between teams and groups
Evaluating the essential teamwork competencies in a cross-cultural context
Exploring key personal independent self-management abilities
Developing effective interpersonal communication skills
Learning successful project and time management capabilities
The Course Aim
To enhance an ability to work cooperatively in teams and gain an awareness of the importance of key self-management skills required to perform successfully in the context of assigned independent learning tasks
The Course Objective
By the end of this course, students should be able to perform their role effectively in teams to achieve a successful outcome to required project objectives and demonstrate an awareness of positive interpersonal communication strategies to avoid conflict.
